Join us this afternoon, 4-7 pm, for an all-Italian wine tasting. Also, you will want to know that we have set the date for our next wine dinner; it's Wednesday, May 13, at our near neighbor's, La Mancha, and I should have a menu for you next week. List of new wines and my current sampler follow. On a practical note: My e-mail advising that the weekly bulletin has been posted is bouncing back to me from all those on the list who use earthlink; they have apparently instituted a new spam filter and think my message is spam, so I will try a different header this week and hope that works.

Joseph Mellot Sincerité 2007 Sauvignon Blanc
I guess I'm always a sucker for a good — and good value — Sauvignon Blanc, and this one surely fills the bill. Produced by one of the leading estates of the Loire Valley (the Mellot dynasty dates back nearly five centuries), this is a clean, precise wine that is a celebration of Sauvignon Blanc: it is clear and brilliant, with a nose that combines white flowers and citrus fruits, with fresh spicy flavors on the palate.

Chateau de la Roulerie 2008 Rosé d'Anjou
The Germain family owns property in both Bordeaux and the Loire; grape growers and winemakers for six generations, the Germains practice agriculture raisonnée, farming their vines with minimal intervention. Their Loire property, Chateau de la Roulerie, located in Anjou, produces a red, a dry white, and a sweet Coteaux du Layon as well as this charming rosé, a blend of Gamay and Grolleau, the Loire's everyday dark-berried vine. The wine is a beautiful salmon pink, with a bouquet of raspberries and strawberries; there is just a hint of licorice on the palate, and the wine's fine acidity makes for a fresh lingering finish.

X Winery 2006 Red X
I'm not usually one for quoting Robert Parker, but this is too good to pass up! "The most obvious question with respect to X Winery and proprietor Reed Renaudin is how can these wines be this good at these prices? Everyone is looking for good values today, and here are some e(X)ceptional bargains." Renaudin started X Winery (and sister winery Amicus Cellars) in 2000 for the express purpose of creating wines that over-deliver on quality, and Red X is proof of his success. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah from Napa, Lake County, and Paso Robles, this is a voluptuous wine with moderate-strong flavors, medium body, soft tannins, and a long finish.
